In the late 1970s, Andy Warhol embarked on two groundbreaking series: Torsos and Sex Parts. While Torsos received praise for its classical nude aesthetics, the Sex Parts series pushed boundaries, blurring the line between art and pornography. The Torsos series was intended for museum exhibitions, debuting at the Grand Palais in Paris, while the more sexually charged works of the Sex Parts series were created for private collections.

Inspired by the history of erotic art and classical nudes, Warhol delved into explicit depictions of the male body. However, the origin of the series traces back to a casual encounter with a man who boasted about his physique. Warhol photographed his genitals, which ended up in a box labeled “Sex Parts.” This sparked the concept for the artworks, with subsequent subjects recruited from gay bathhouses. The resulting compositions focused on the area between the waist and thighs, transformed into vibrant screenprints with hand-applied colors and a final black layer. Warhol cheekily referred to these works as “landscapes.”

Warhol’s bold exploration of sexuality and his own acceptance of his identity as a gay man are embedded in these artworks. At the time they were released, they challenged societal norms and today they continue to captivate collectors with their daring exploration of eroticism. These artworks hold immense value for collectors due to their groundbreaking nature and their connection to Warhol’s personal journey of self-acceptance.
