Ladies and Gentlemen 132 Print by Andy Warhol
Ladies and Gentlemen 132 by Andy Warhol is one of fourteen screenprints in the portfolio, inspired by an art dealer's suggestion in 1975. The series features Black and Latinx drag queens from a popular club in New York, represented through monochrome compositions and bold, colorful blocks.
The models were scouted and photographed by Warhol's associate, Bob Colacello, at his request. Despite the series not naming the models, the Andy Warhol Foundation was able to identify all but one in 2014. Notable figures such as Marsha P. Johnson and Wilhelmina Ross are featured in the series, reflecting Warhol's signature style of capturing both famous and non-famous individuals. Through this daring and groundbreaking portfolio, Warhol highlights the intersections of identity and gender within the Black and Latinx queer community, bringing attention to a marginalized group during a crucial time.
