Ace Gallery Exhibition Poster “The American Indian Series” (Signed by Warhol and Russel Means)
Artist: Andy Warhol
Year: 1977
Medium: Offset Lithograph
Size: 50 × 34 in.
“The American Indian Series” off-set lithograph art poster was designed and hand signed by Andy Warhol to advertise his 1976-1977 American Indian series of paintings and drawings of Native American civil rights activist, Russel Means. Andy Warhol did poster signings at all three consecutive exhibitions that debuted at Flow Ace Gallery Paris in October 1976, Ace Gallery Vancouver in November 1976, and finally Ace Gallery Los Angeles in February 1977. Each exhibition had its own poster. This blue poster is from the Los Angeles Exhibition.
The portrait depicts Russel Means, an American Indian rights activist and member of the American Indian Movement. Warhol’s portraits of Russel Means have become an emblem of the crises of contemporary America and the importance of its minorities.
Hand-signed in ink by Andy Warhol along the right of the image and signed in ink by Russel Means on the bottom right of the image. Only a few of these posters were signed by both Warhol and Means thus making this poster rare and collectible.
