Andy Warhol did poster signings at all three consecutive exhibitions that debuted at Flow Ace Gallery Paris in October 1976, Ace Gallery Vancouver in November 1976, and finally Ace Gallery Los Angeles in February 1977. Each exhibition had its own poster. This blue poster is from the Los Angeles Exhibition.
The portrait depicts Russel Means, an American Indian rights activist and member of the American Indian Movement. Warhol’s portraits of Russel Means have become an emblem of the crises of contemporary America and the importance of its minorities.
